Decisions will have to be made quickly on Crysencio Summerville when he returns to Leeds United for pre-season. With a January transfer request rejected and less than one year on his contract, Victor Orta and Jesse Marsch should have already made up their minds on his next step.
The Netherlands winger was ruled out for the rest of the season when he twisted his ankle in late April, but more than once Marsch said he had planned to use Summerville more. In his final debrief of the season, Marsch said exactly what the 20-year-old needed to hear as he went away for a summer break.
Asked whether youth was the way forward for Leeds after increased exposure for Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood, Marsch went out of his way to express his Summerville disappointment. He said: “Yeah, it’s too bad Cry got hurt because he was emerging as a better player and engaging in the group more and more.

“The balance with any team, especially if you want to play active football, is to get the balance of leadership and experienced players on the pitch, but also youth and younger legs that are brave, that can run and can meet the standards we want to play.”
The majority of the Whites are expected back at Thorp Arch within the next fortnight to begin pre-season. If Summerville has a future at Leeds, a new deal will need to be thrashed out sooner rather than later.
