Crowds gather in Lanarkshire street to evict alleged paedophile from community

Police had to be called to a Wishaw street after crowds gathered to evict an alleged paedophile from the area.

Locals arrived in Cambusnethan’s Greenfield Drive after a group describing itself as an Online Child Protection And Awareness Team posted information about an individual on its public Facebook page.

Social media videos from show crowds cheering as the man is taken away by several officers and put into a police van.

Police confirmed no-one was arrested in connection with the incident.

A police source told Lanarkshire Live : “We were made aware of a crowd gathered on Greenfield Drive shortly after 7pm last Monday (November 22).

“Officers attended and engaged with the group who dispersed later in the evening.”

A concerned local resident, who asked not to be named, told us that "it’s worrying" to have an alleged sex offender "living so near a school and in an area where lots of children live and are outside playing".

Our source added: “I’m glad he has been driven out the street, but where does he go now?

"The police and council need to make sure he’s not housed so close to a school next time.”

A second protest took place in Wishaw’s Stewarton Street the following night with crowds gathering believing the same alleged paedophile was in one of the properties.

Sgt. Allan Barnstaple confirmed with us that officers attended and that a crowd was again dispersed after engagement with officers.

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council said: “Sex offenders are monitored in the community under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) which involve the police service, local authorities, the NHS, Scottish Prison Service and other partners.

“None of the partners engaged in MAPPA comment on specific cases or individuals.

"The management of sex offenders in the community is a particularly sensitive and complex area of work.

“Public safety is always the main priority in all cases. While it remains the main priority, a balance is required between public safety and the right of the individual."
