Police in far north Queensland are searching a waterway for a man in his 40s who “failed to surface” after a report of a crocodile attack.

Queensland police said a search operation was under way near Cooktown, at Annan River Bridge, after a call to emergency services shortly after 2pm on Saturday.

Queensland ambulance service said it had attended to a report of a crocodile attack at 2.07pm in relation to a man in his 40s.

A police spokesperson said the search was being carried out “following reports of a man entering the water and failing to surface”.

A spokesperson for Queensland’s environment department said it was aware of the incident and wildlife rangers were heading to Cooktown “to offer assistance, if required”.
