Critical Fire Threat In Southern California

California wild fire

The Hughes Fire near Castaic, in northern Los Angeles County, has prompted evacuation orders for thousands of residents as fire crews battle the out-of-control blaze. As of 5 p.m., the fire had burned over 9,000 acres and was 0% contained, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Anthony Marrone. Fortunately, no structures have been reported damaged or destroyed so far.

The unincorporated community of Castaic, located about 15 miles northwest of Santa Clarita, is under threat as the fire borders the Angeles National Forest. Approximately 31,000 residents are under evacuation orders, with an additional 23,000 under evacuation warnings, as confirmed by Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

Chief Marrone highlighted the significant firefighting effort with over 4,000 personnel assigned to the incident, including both ground and air support. Despite the challenging conditions, progress is being made in containing the fire. The National Weather Service has extended a red flag warning for most of Los Angeles and Ventura counties due to moderate Santa Ana winds.

The fire, which started near Castaic Lake, is burning in an area known for its dry, grassy hills, making containment efforts critical. The fire conditions remain severe, and fire officials emphasize the importance of following evacuation orders issued by local authorities.

Evacuations have impacted various facilities, including a county jail in Castaic, partially evacuated to ensure inmate safety. Schools and colleges in the area have also been closed as a precautionary measure. Smoke from the fire has been visible as far as Oxnard in Ventura County.

Thermal intelligence data indicates the fire is likely to spread south and west, posing a threat to Castaic and surrounding areas. The Angeles National Forest is closed to the public until January 24 to ensure public safety.

Fire officials are working diligently to combat the Hughes Fire and protect the communities at risk. The situation remains dynamic, and residents are urged to stay informed and follow safety instructions as the firefighting efforts continue.
