Cristiano Ronaldo warned over Chelsea transfer as Erik ten Hag to implement "new rules"

Cristiano Ronaldo has been warned off a surprise transfer to Chelsea as Erik ten Hag is prepared to implement "new rules" to get the best out of the 37-year-old forward at Manchester United.

Ronaldo was the Red Devils' shining light last season, notching 24 goals across all competitions with 18 of those coming where it matters most - in the Premier League. Having penned a two-year contract at Old Trafford last summer 12 years after he first left, Ronaldo has just one season left to run on his current deal.

Despite this, there has been intense speculation surrounding Ronaldo's club future this summer amid reports the iconic number seven is frustrated by United's own lack of activity in the transfer market. Arsenal, Manchester City, Spurs and Liverpool have all made additions while the Red Devils are still awaiting their first arrival.

In turn, the rumour mill went into overdrive after new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is reported to have met with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes where the future of the United star was brought up in conversation. The idea of the United legend swapping Manchester for west London is sure to sting the Old Trafford faithful.

However, Ex-United star Louis Saha has opened up on the speculation and insisted it is better for both parties if Ronaldo remains a United player for the final year of his contract. With that being said, the former Real Madrid man will have to adhere to new some new rules enforced by Ten Hag.

Speaking to BonusCodeBets, Saha explained: "It could go both ways, no one can guarantee anything apart from Cristiano. He's the only one to answer that. It wouldn't be the right move for Man United to let him go because he’s such a big asset.

"I can definitely see him continuing to keep doing what he’s doing best, which is scoring goals and helping his club get back to where it belongs."

Saha went on to address the idea that Ronaldo's United future may have plunged into doubt once it had been confirmed Ten Hag would take the reins at Old Trafford.

"He can still play a part under Ten Hag, not only by scoring goals but with his stature," the former Red Devil added. "I'm sure the new manager will want to implement some new rules and new standards that fit with Ronaldo.

"Maybe not so much on the pressing side, but his work ethic and his desire to always be accountable. Performance-wise, Ronaldo is up there with the best, he'll drive the players that need confidence, like Rashford. It's a new manager, new rules, new atmosphere and I'm very excited."
