Cristiano Ronaldo told he is recreating David Beckham situation after Portugal World Cup exit

When David Beckham moved to the MLS, he created a media frenzy in the States.

Beckham had become a global superstar during his time at Manchester United and Real Madrid, so it came as a shock when he made the decision to move across the pond and join MLS side LA Galaxy.

Though it turned out to be for the best as it only cemented his legacy. Ex-Manchester United star Beckham has now retired but remains heavily connected with the MLS since he as a part-owner of the Inter Miami franchise.

In recent weeks Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a move to the MLS to join Beckham's Miami side and if he did move, fans would expect the same shockwaves to resonate throughout the country.

Ronaldo is always the centre of attention. The 37-year-old was benched by Fernando Santos during the World Cup and social media exploded, meaning Ronaldo was the story even though he wasn't on the pitch.

Landon Donovan, who played with Beckham and also was part of Fox's coverage of the World Cup, says the media focus around Ronaldo is very much like the one that his former LA Galaxy teammate had while he was in America.

On the State of the Union podcast, former USA international Donovan stated: "It's not the same level but I'll use the analogy, when David Beckham was in LA. He was a top player, made us better in almost every way but there is a weight there and every time Portugal come out of the tunnel or off the bus it's all about Cristiano.

"And it's not his fault, that's just the reality. That is a weight that weighs on these young men and you have to think going forward when he's not there, they will probably look like a different team."
