Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea assessed as Todd Boehly seeks perfect Romelu Lukaku replacement

According to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly met with Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes in Portugal last week. Whilst there have been no official links between the Blues and Ronaldo, the reports suggest the idea of a possible transfer was discussed.

After an underwhelming season from Manchester United, it is understandable if Ronaldo were keen to leave them this summer. The player is undoubtedly one of the best in the world with openly high standards for the game. At 37 years old, he still managed 24 goals in 38 games for the Red Devils - the highest amongst his teammates (14 more than Bruno Fernade,s who was 2nd on the list). Despite finishing the season as top goalscorer for United, there were still doubts about his compatibility with the squad. Fans complained that he was disrupting the flow and harmony of the team.

Now, in an ideal world, Ronaldo and Manchester United would be a match made in heaven. The kind of homecoming that Chelsea expected with Romelu Lukaku. However, if Ronaldo would like a move to the west side of London, I’m sure he’d fit right in.

It’s easy to assume that Ronaldo would not be the correct man for Chelsea. He’s at an age where he’s expected to see less game time, he is not able to perform to the level that he once was when he was 10 years younger. But surely he is still a sweet option to have on your team?

Thomas Tuchel’s Blues have struggled to find the back of the net on occasion where it mattered most. The two Wembley finals last season against Liverpool ended goalless before Chelsea lost out on penalties. Funnily enough, the only thing Chelsea needed on the day was a clinical goalscorer. The chances were created, and the goal-scoring opportunities were there, but a ruthless finisher was not on hand to put them away.

On several occasions, we have seen Ronaldo pull a masterclass performance out of the bag for a Man United team that struggled with creativity. The switch in managers and style of play, coupled with a lack of confidence affected United and it was glaringly evident on the pitch. Somehow, Ronaldo still managed to pull them out of sticky circumstances all season.

Of course, there were the odd occasions where he’d not be as effective as many would have liked. A lack of service and 37 years of life could cause this. Thomas Tuchel has a healthy rotation with Kai Havertz and Timo Werner to partner him in attack at times like this.

I’m not saying, bring Ronaldo to Stamford Bridge at all costs. I’m simply asking if it would be such a bad idea… Let me know what you think in the comment section below!
