Cristiano Ronaldo snubs Ballon D'Or awards as Lionel Messi lands record gong

Cristiano Ronaldo has seemingly snubbed this year's Ballon D'Or awards in Paris to make a trip to Lisbon.

The Juventus and Portugal striker was one of the main contenders for the prize at Monday's ceremony.

However, Lionel Messi won the award for a record sixth time, which sees him edge in front of rival Ronaldo, who has been victorious on five occasions.

Having heard he had not won the prize, Ronaldo is said to have declined the invitation of organisers France Football.

Ronaldo posted a picture onto his Instagram account just hours before the awards, posing in one of his Pestana hotels in Lisbon.

He wrote: "Visiting the best spot in town," along with an image of him inside the hotel's restaurant CR7 Corner Bar and Bistro.

Over the weekend supposed leaked ranking of this year's award emerged, showing Messi topping the vote ahead of Liverpool pair Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

It is not clear whether the leaked rankings are genuine, but they showed Messi had collected 446 points compared to van Dijk's 382, and Salah's 179, with Ronaldo on 133.

Ronaldo's omission from the top three would see him fail to get on the podium for the first time since 2010, having won the award in four of the last six years.

It is the latest blow for the 34-year-old, who was not included in the FIFPRO World XI back in September, where Messi picked up the FIFA Best Player of the Year award.

Ronaldo did not attend those awards either, posting an image of himself at home with son, Cristiano Jr, just 10 minutes after the ceremony in Milan had ended.

He said earlier this year: "Messi’s in the history of football.

“But I think I have to have six or seven or eight [Ballon D'Or's] to be above him. I’d love it, I think I deserve it.”
