Cristiano Ronaldo slammed over "irritating" behaviour after picking on Man Utd teammates

Cristiano Ronaldo has been told he is irritating after going after his Manchester United teammates.

The 36-year-old is the top goalscorer this season at Old Trafford after netting 14 in all competitions but there have been suggestions that the forward is holding the club back.

After the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick was brought in with his very clear high-pressing style of play.

It has been a slow start for the German coach, who will hold the job until the summer when a successor will be picked, and Saturday’s result against Aston Villa was the third draw of his reign so far.

However, last week Ronaldo took aim at the youngsters at United and told them to start listening to their more experienced teammates.

"The mature players, the older players, can always help the younger players," he told Sky Sports.

"But I can give you an example if I give you advice, even if you are younger than me, but if that's not in your plan during your daily life then it will be difficult. You can speak all day with that person, but if it's not coming from inside of you then it is impossible.

"But the other people do not accept that if you criticise them - I don't say this generation of our players but in general, I have kids, I know.

"Sometimes if you be a little bit harder they do the opposite. You have to find the right balance to speak with them.”

While Ronaldo intended to give those at United a boost, some have construed his interview negatively - including BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks who called the former Juventus star a “prima donna”.

In his Team of the Week column for BBC Sport, Crooks wrote: “Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick wants his players to hold each other to account after Cristiano Ronaldo questioned their mentality.

“Ronaldo has expressed concern about the attitude of some his teammates and suggested it needs to be better for United to be successful this term.

“I couldn't agree more - and it should start with him. Ever since he returned to Old Trafford the Portuguese international has behaved like a prima donna.

“He may be the star of the show but the constant waving of his hands in the air when events don't go his way - a sign that the crowd's moans and groans regarding United's failures are all down to his team-mates and nothing to do with him - is irritating."

Crooks said he "expected better" from a bona fide superstar like Ronaldo and questioned his ability to work with his team rather than as an individual.

He then explained how Ronaldo's duties are now completely different to at his previous clubs Juventus and Real Madrid, as United are not at the top table of world football anymore.

“Ronaldo always looks immaculate on the pitch but sometimes, especially when things are going badly, he has to get among the muck and nettles in order to pull his team through difficult periods."
