Cristiano Ronaldo could scarcely believe it when Ghana threatened an unlikely comeback just moments after he was taken off in a thrilling World Cup clash at Stadium 974.
Portugal skipper Ronaldo had become the first player to score in five different World Cups when he netted a controversial penalty in the 65th minute - with the kick awarded after Ronaldo had been judged to have been tripped by Southampton defender Mohamed Salisu.
The 37-year-old - who this week left Manchester United when his contract was terminated by mutual consent - fired his penalty down the middle of the goal to give Portugal the lead and spark a remarkable final half an hour of the match.
Ghana levelled the scored when the former Swansea and West Ham forward Andre Ayew tapped in from close range, only for a superb Bruno Fernandes through ball to find Joao Felix who clipped home to make it 2-1.
Substitute Rafael Leao - who had only come on just moments earlier soon made it 3-1 with a fine finish into the far corner, but Ghana refused to lie down.
With Ronaldo substituted in the 88th minute to a standing ovation, the 2016 European Champions conceded again when Ghana sub Osman Bukari nodded home at the far post.
Despite his side still trailing, Bukari raced away from his teammates to the corner flag and performed Ronaldo's trademark 'Siu' celebration, which had so delighted the crowd after the Portugal icon had scored the penalty.
The big screen at Stadium 974 then immediately switched to Ronaldo sitting on the bench and gesturing angrily, seemingly at the concession of the goal and not Bukari's celebration.
The Portuguese were able to hold on to the victory in the end, despite a late blunder from goalkeeper Diogo Costa, and Ronaldo came back onto the pitch to celebrate with his teammates at the end of the game.
Portugal's meeting with Ghana was Ronaldo's first since he left United on Tuesday.
United said in a statement: " Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.
"The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.
"Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch."
Ronaldo replied to statement, saying: "Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early.
"I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.
"I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future."
