Cristiano Ronaldo relaxes on holiday ahead of brutal first pre-season with Erik ten Hag

Manchester United 's players can expect a tough pre-season under new manager Erik ten Hag, so Cristiano Ronaldo is among those taking the opportunity to relax before the hard work begins.

A number of first-teamers were denied an extended break at the end of the season due to their international responsibilities. For Ronaldo, this meant Nations League action, including a two-goal display in Portugal's 4-0 victory over Switzerland.

The veteran missed his country's defeat in the reverse fixture through injury. However, shortly after the international break, he set off on a family holiday, just months after he and partner Georgina Rodriguez welcomed their new baby daughter, Bella Esmerelda.

Ronaldo and his family have travelled to Majorca for a 10-day break, making the trip by private jet. According to The Sun, they are staying at a secluded luxury villa, with the footballer shipping over his £8.5million Bugatti as well as a Mercedes SUV.

The 37-year-old has been sharing photos from the trip on social media, as has his partner. One of the snaps, with Ronaldo and his family sat around a dining table, is captioned 'Vacation with love!'.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, posted a selection of photos from aboard the private jet. The caption reads, simply, 'My life'.

When Ronaldo returns to Manchester, he and his colleagues will be in line for a busy few weeks before the new season gets underway in early August. The former Real Madrid star was voted as United's player of the season by the club's fans, but reflected on what he considered a "very difficult" season as the Red Devils finished outside the top four.

"Thanks to all the fans who voted for me," he said on Instagram. "I couldn’t be more proud of winning the Sir Matt Busby Award in my comeback year to Old Trafford and to the Premier League.

"This award goes to all the supporters who’ve never let us down during a very difficult season. Thank you so much for always being on our side and for helping us get Man. United back on track. We know we can count on you."

New manager Ten Hag will aim to lift United back into the Champions League places after underwhelming form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick brought about a sixth-place finish last term. The ex-Ajax boss arrived in England ahead of the final game of the 2021-22 season after recognising the size of the task at hand and has already made his thoughts known.

Ten Hag has sent an email to United's players in which he asserted no one player is more important than the team. He also expects his players' fitness levels to be 'the best they have ever been', according to The Sun, suggesting a busy pre-season is on the cards.

United will begin the 2022-23 campaign at home to Brighton, with a chance to avenge the 4-0 defeat they suffered against the Seagulls in May under Rangnick. Their first meeting with a fellow 'Big Six' side comes on August 20, with Liverpool making the trip to Old Trafford after winning the corresponding fixture 5-0 last season.
