Cristiano Ronaldo has posted a thank you message to Manchester United fans after winning the club’s Player of the Year award.
The 37-year-old scooped the Sir Matt Busby Award after enjoying a superb first season back at Old Trafford following his return last summer. Ronaldo scored 24 goal in all competitions as he proved to be a rare bright spark in an otherwise disastrous season for United.
Ronaldo also won the club’s goal of the season competition, with his spectacular strike against Tottenham back in March winning the public vote. The Portugal international dominated the shortlist, with his strike in the return fixture at Spurs finishing second.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s latest Player of the Year prize sees him move level with David de Gea for the most awards, with Ronaldo adding a fourth to the three he won during his first spell at Old Trafford. United fans will hope he has the chance to move clear of his teammate next season, having already dropped a big hint that he plans on staying at Old Trafford.
And Ronaldo paid tribute to the club’s supporters as he posted on Instagram to mark his latest accolade. Fresh from scoring twice for Portugal against Switzerland on Sunday, the United talisman thanked fans for getting the club “back on track”.
“Thanks to all the fans who voted for me,” Ronaldo posted. “I couldn’t be more proud of winning the Sir Matt Busby Award in my comeback year to Old Trafford and to the Premier League.
“This award goes to all the supporters who’ve never let us down during a very difficult season. Thank you so much for always being on our side and for helping us get Man United back on track. We know we can count on you.”
Having been one of United’s rare bright sparks during the 2021/22 campaign, Ronaldo looks to confirmed he will remain at Old Trafford for next season. “I was and still am very happy to be here,” Ronaldo said last week.
"For me, the most important thing is to try to win the games and try to win some championship or some cup but I believe that Manchester will be where they belong. As I say before, sometimes it takes time but I still believe."
