Cristiano Ronaldo 'makes decision' on Man Utd future after Champions League failure

Cristiano Ronaldo will not leave Manchester United this summer as he plans to see out his contract at Old Trafford, according to reports.

The Portuguese superstar, 37, returned to the Red Devils in a stunning transfer from Juventus last August for a fee in the region of £13million. He signed a two-year deal lasting until the summer of 2023 which includes the option for a further season.

Unsurprisingly, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has found the back of the net on a regular basis and he is United's top scorer this season with 18 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions.

However, he was ineffectual over two last-16 legs against Atletico Madrid and could not prevent Ralf Rangnick 's side crashing out of the Champions League.

Ronaldo was visibly furious throughout Tuesday night's encounter and there have been reports he is far from happy with the situation under Rangnick.

The former Real Madrid forward was said to be livid with the interim manager for dropping him from the squad to face Manchester City earlier this month, even though he was carrying a minor hip injury.

Instead of travelling to the Etihad with his teammates to attend the derby, Ronaldo flew to Portugal in a move which raised eyebrows among the squad.

He returned to the starting XI the following weekend and reminded fans what he is capable of with a breathtaking hat-trick to sink Tottenham and secure three vital Premier League points.

The United faithful will hope there are many more vintage performances to come from Ronaldo as he intends to stay with the club next season, according to AS. The Spanish outlet claims the veteran still believes he made the right call by rejoining the Red Devils even if they have no chance of winning silverware this season.

The report adds Ronaldo trusts Old Trafford chiefs to make a sensible managerial appointment this summer, when Rangnick's spell as interim ends.

The Sporting Lisbon academy graduate is believed to be relishing the prospect of working with a new, elite-level boss after bucking heads with Rangnick at times.

Paris Saint-Germain's Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax's Erin ten Hag are the leading contenders to take over from the German, while Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel is also in the frame amid doubts over his future at Stamford Bridge.

Regardless of who fills the dugout next season, Ronaldo expects the next permanent manager to receive heavy backing in the summer transfer market so United are capable of competing for trophies next season.
