Cristiano Ronaldo left out of Manchester United pre-season tour as club confirm 31-man squad

Manchester United have confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence from their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

The 37-year-old has requested to leave the Old Trafford club following their failure to qualify for the Champions League and is linked with a move to Chelsea.

However, he will miss the flight to Bangkok due to family issues, as confirmed by the club, in a matter unrelated to his transfer future.

A statement read: “Cristiano Ronaldo will not be in the party departing for Thailand as he has been granted additional time off to deal with a family issue.”

A 31-man squad will travel to Asia for the clash with Liverpool on Tuesday before friendlies against Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

New signing Tyrell Malacia is joined by 13 academy players on Erik ten Hag’s first tour as manager, including Alejandro Garnacho, Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage.

Phil Jones misses out while on a “specialist pre-season programme”, which the defender was also placed on last summer.

Also absent are Brandon Williams with a “small issue” and Andreas Pereira, only recently returned from a loan spell at Flamengo - both players are linked with moves away.

Full Man United tour squad:

David De Gea, Tom Heaton, Nathan Bishop, Matej Kovar; Eric Bailly, Diogo Dalot, Ethan Laird, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Alex Telles, Axel Tuanzebe, Raphael Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka; Amad, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, James Garner, Hannibal, Zidane Iqbal, Scott McTominay, Facundo Pellistri, Charlie Savage, Donny van de Beek; Tahith Chong, Anthony Elanga, Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho.
