Cristiano Ronaldo issues rallying cry to Manchester United fans ahead of Atletico Madrid tie

Cristiano Ronaldo has issued a rallying cry to Manchester United’s fans ahead of their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.

United will be aiming to book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition as they host Diego Simeone’s side in the second leg of their last-16 tie. The encounter is evenly poised after the Reds claimed a 1-1 draw on their travels to the Wanda Metropolitano, with Anthony Elanga’s equaliser ensuring there’s nothing to separate the sides at the halfway stage.

The Champions League of course represents United’s last remaining hope of some silverware this season. Although they will be huge underdogs to go all the way, victory against Atletico on Tuesday would provide another boost after an encouraging weekend for Ralf Rangnick’s side.

Having claimed a crucial victory over Tottenham, the Reds still retain hopes of qualifying for next season’s competition. And Ronaldo will hope to play a key role in that happening.

The Portuguese superstar goes into the second leg having hit back at his critics this season in style after a brilliant hat-trick against Spurs at the weekend. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s performance came as a timely reminder of his qualities, having faced questions over his place in the side this season.

And Ronaldo has certainly enjoyed himself in the Champions League this season, having scored six goals in the group stages as he almost single-handedly secured United’s progress to the knockout stages. The 37-year-old has taken to Instagram ahead of Tuesday’s encounter with Atletico to send a message to United’s fans, calling on them to play their part at Old Trafford.

“Tomorrow is one of those days that we’ve all been waiting for,” Ronaldo posted. “One of those chances to show the world the reason why Old Trafford is known as the Theatre of Dreams.

“Let’s recreate the amazing atmosphere that we saw in our last home game and let’s keep our Champions League dream alive! We are Man. United! Let’s do this together! Let’s go, Devils!”

Ronaldo will also be aiming to continue his impressive record against Atletico on Tuesday night. The Portuguese was a regular tormentor of the Spanish champions during his time at Real Madrid and Juventus, and will be aiming to get back on the scoresheet after missing out in the first leg.
