Cristiano Ronaldo facing Man United SACK as Old Trafford club 'explore' contract termination options

Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of terminating Cristiano Ronaldo ’s contract.

The Portuguese star has this week taken aim at the club and manager Erik ten Hag in an explosive interview with Piers Morgan. Ronaldo said he had “no respect” for the Dutch coach, who he claims failed to integrate him properly in the red half of Manchester. The former Real Madrid frontman did admit he regretted refusing to come on as a late sub against Tottenham and leaving Old Trafford, but insisted he was provoked into such action by Ten Hag trying to put him on with only three minutes to go.

That came amidst criticism of the standards on show at the club, which Ronaldo said hadn’t progressed since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013. Unnamed club executives also came under fire as the player claimed that they didn’t believe that his daughter was ill, which was his reason for reporting late back to pre-season training.

United released a statement earlier today that read: “ Manchester United has this morning initiated appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview.

We will not be making further comment until this process reaches its conclusion.”

It’s now being reported that the club could sack Ronaldo as a result of his comments. No timeline has been mentioned, but it’s thought United are mindful of the fact that Portugal kick-off their 2022 World Cup campaign next week. There is a reluctance to let the issue drag on too long.

However, the legal red tape will have to be closely looked at, first of all to determine whether or not Ronaldo’s actions allow his contract to be terminated. If an agreement is needed, then it’s likely he’ll want the rest of his mega-money contract paid up before he heads for the Old Trafford exit door.
