Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for two matches, fined £50,000 and warned over his future conduct following an incident at Goodison Park last season after Everton’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
Ronaldo, who is preparing for Portugal’s opening World Cup match against Ghana on Thursday having had his contract at Manchester United terminated by mutual agreement with immediate effect on Tuesday after an explosive television interview with Piers Morgan earlier this month in which he claimed to have felt “betrayed” by the club, was deemed to have breached the Football Association’s Rule E3.
The 37-year-old admitted his conduct after the final whistle on April 9 was improper after footage emerged showing him appear to smash a phone out of an Everton fan’s hand as he made his way from the Goodison pitch to the away dressing room which was temporarily situated at the time within the Park End car park due to coronavirus-induced restrictions – an incident he was later cautioned by the police over in August.
An independent Regulatory Commission found that Ronaldo’s conduct was both improper and violent during a subsequent hearing FA hearing which took place by video conference call on November 8.
The FA have released a detailed account of that process which reveals in his typed response to their initial letter dated April 10, Ronaldo described the atmosphere at the match as “feverish.”
