Cristiano Ronaldo 's former team-mate Patrice Evra "wouldn't be surprised" to see the Portuguese superstar retire.
The former Manchester United man is without a club having parted ways with the Red Devils following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan. It leaves Ronaldo, who is currently dealing with the aftermath of Portugal's World Cup exit, looking for a new club.
The 37-year-old has previously spoken of his desire to play into his 40s and his physical dedication means he could still very much contribute. Ronald's acrimonious Old Trafford exit, coupled with his conduct this season, has seen him heavily criticised from several quarters however.
Evra was among those to continue defending the five-time Ballon d'Or winner up until the end of his United spell. Despite that, the Frenchman has entertained the possiblity of him calling time on his career after failing to win a World Cup with Portugal.
He told Sky Sports : “When I have talked to him I haven't spoken about what he is going to do next. We have been talking more about life and family. But I don't know [what he will do next]. Messi is saying he will retire [from the World Cup], but I don't know if Ronaldo will retire.
"Sometimes, when you are getting so much criticism, especially at the end of your career, you are like 'OK, I think it's time to stop'. That must be a feeling, especially when you are not in the starting XI of your national team, because that is what Cristiano wanted; to play, be fit and to win the World Cup with his country.
"This was his dream; now he doesn't have that dream. Although I won't talk for Cristiano, I wouldn't be surprised if he says he is retiring. Now everything Cristiano does he is a 'bad person', a 'bad player' or whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to retire."
Ronaldo's World Cup career ended with Portugal suffering a surprise defeat to Morocco in the last eight. The 37-year-old had been relegated to the bench for the last 16 win over Switzerland and was again overlooked for selection in the quarter-final with his half-time entrance unable to make a difference.
The veteran superstar said afterwards on social media: "I gave my all. Leave it all out on the field. I never turned my face to the fight and I never gave up on that dream. sadly yesterday the dream ended It's not worth reacting to heat. I just want you all to know that much has been said, much has been written, much has been speculated, but my dedication to Portugal has not changed not for a moment."
