Cristiano Ronaldo confronted by intruder as he leaves World Cup in floods of tears

Cristiano Ronaldo left the 2022 World Cup in floods of tears moments after being confronted by a pitch intruder.

Ronaldo's Portugal were beaten 1-0 by Morocco and it all proved too much for the former Manchester United player who burst into tears after what is surely his last ever appearance at a World Cup.

As Morocco celebrated a piece of footballing history, Ronaldo battled back the tears before trudging off the field to head straight down the tunnel. A lone pitch invader then appeared to try and confront him as he headed off, causing security to step in and haul him away.

TV cameras then followed Ronaldo all the way down the tunnel as he cried uncontrollably.

The 2016 European champions were highly fancied to make a mark at this tournament, but became the latest side to be shocked by the tournament's surprise package, Morocco.

Youssef En-Nesyri's towering header just before the break proved enough to send Portugal out of the tournament, and book Morocco's place in the last four of the tournament, becoming the first African nation in history to do so.

Ronaldo, as he did for the win over Switzerland, started from the bench at the Al Thumama Stadium, and watched on as his team-mates struggled to break down a resilient and dogged Moroccan defence.

He was then introduced just after the break, coming on for Ruben Neves, but couldn't inspire his team to victory, despite forcing a fine save from Yassine Bounou late on.

At the age of 37, this was likely his last chance to finally win a World Cup, and the weight of seeing his dream fall apart was clearly too much when the final whistle was blown.
