Crisp lovers puzzled over recipe for 'lettuce chips' - as it's literally just salad

It's difficult to resist a packet of crisps, whether that be a moreish tube of Pringles or a lunchtime bag of tangy salt and vinegar.

In recent years, there's been a trend towards healthier crisp options, with plenty of low-calorie choices being offered by big-name brands, while health-conscious snackers have taken to serving up flavourful batches of kale or apple crisps.

However, some crisp lovers feel things may have gone too far when it comes to 'lettuce chips', a snack which from the name alone sounds a little too virtuous to feel indulgent. After all, it's difficult to imagine curling up in front of a good film with a big bowl of lettuce.

Although it may not sound that treat-worthy, many healthy food fans swear by it, ripping apart lettuce and coating the leaves in lemon juice and apple cider vinegar before adding a hearty shake of seasoning.

These 'crisps' don't need to go in an air fryer or under the grill or anything, with fans simply munching on the leaves raw.

The unusual new craze has been sweeping TikTok, with one video being shared by a user named houseofketo, who adds granulated onion on top.

Similarly, TikToker Amal Awad - username amalawadfit - advised that there is a great option for those with a "salty tooth", advising that pink Himalayan salt is best for this simple recipe.

Meanwhile in another TikTok video from athomewithshannon vlogger Shannon Doherty - the healthy snack is given a big thumbs up, with Shannon remarking that she'd been "craving" the snack ever since seeing others try it out online.

Shannon, who used red wine vinegar in her version, enthused that they were "so good", urging her followers: "You guys! Try them! I was wondering at first too but love it as a snack now!"

However, not everybody shares Shannon's excitement, with one puzzled person commenting: "That is a salad. Oil, vinegar, salt, pepper is how Italians prepare their salads every day. Are you being funny?"

Another wrote: "Am I the only one who rewatched this thinking I missed something? No? Okay cool, so are we changing the word salad to lettuce chips?"
