Northern Territory Police say human remains, including a skull, have been discovered outside the outback town of Katherine.
In a statement, NT Police said a member of the public found skeletal remains and "what appeared to be a human skull" on Tuesday afternoon.
A crime scene has been declared at the site, about 15 kilometres north of Katherine.
Police have not disclosed the exact location of the scene.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact police on 13 14 44.
Acting Superintendent Michael Schumacher said police were unable to provide more information, citing the ongoing investigation.
"NT Police are currently working closely with the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) and other specialist teams," he said.
It's the second discovery of human remains in the Northern Territory in just over week, after NT Police launched an investigation into remains found near a well-known beach in Darwin's northern suburbs last Wednesday.
A crime scene was established near to Lee Point Beach after a bushwalker discovered the "large number of bones" in bushland.
At the time, police said forensic specialists were working to determine the cause and timing of the death, and whether it was suspicious.
"At this early stage, it's probably impossible to give an accurate estimation other than the fact that it is skeletal remains, and the skull is intact," Acting Superintendent Day said at a press conference on Friday.
He said there was "no indication of trauma" to the skull or larger bones from initial examinations.
