Cricklewood fire: 70 firefighters tackle huge blaze at flats above shop

Roughly 70 firefighters tackled a blaze that broke out in north London in a four-storey building containing a shop and flats above.

Ten fire engines and several ambulance crews rushed to the scene in Cricklewood Broadway in Cricklewood at about 10.10am.

More than half of the third floor of the four-storey building was alight as well as the roof, according to London Fire Brigade (LFB).

Fire engines from West Hampstead, Kentish Town, Finchley and surrounding fire stations were at the scene, and spent more than two-and-a-half hours bringing the blaze under control.

A photo from the scene showed the street filled with smoke, as firefighters shot jets of water at the building.

An eyewitness reported “lots of fire engines and ambulances” at the scene, while another described the fire as “massive”.

LFB is urging people to avoid the area.

The brigade says the cause of the fire is under investigation.

One person left the property before firefighters arrived, and another person self-presented themselves at hospital.

London Ambulance Service was also called to the blaze around 10.15am, and the fire was under control by 12.45pm.

A spokesperson said: “We have sent a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an incident response officer, a medic in a fast response car and members of our hazardous area response team (HART).

“Our first medics arrived in less than three minutes.”
