A seafarer who went overboard from a Newcastle-bound bulk carrier late on Thursday night was found alive the following evening by a local doctor at Swansea who was on a recreational fishing boat.

NSW Police have said the man was wearing a life vest and after he was found, was quickly taken to John Hunter Hospital under Border Force surveillance for treatment of hypothermia.

The crewman had gone overboard from the Singapore-flagged Double Delight - a 234-metre ship that remained moored in Newcastle on Saturday, November 9 - about 11.30pm Thursday, when the ship was roughly eight kilometres southwest of the local harbour.

AMSA coordinated a multi-agency search and tasked Newcastle-based water police units and Marine Rescue NSW vessels to help.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a defence helicopter from Williamtown assisted the search from above on Friday afternoon. They could be seen on the flight radar, combing the search area in a grid pattern.
