'Cretin' tourist dives 30ft into Venice canal wearing only underpants as mayor rages

A tourist who dived 30 feet from the roof of a palazzo in Venice has enraged the mayor of the World Heritage city.

The young man, clad solely in his underpants, was filmed leaping from the top of the building and performing what looked like a belly flop into the canal below.

“We should give a certificate of stupidity and a good number of kicks up the backside to this individual,” Luigi Brugnaro wrote on Twitter, along with a video of the stunt.

He continued: "We are trying to identify and charge him, along with his friend who took a video of the cretin for social media.

“These people are risking their necks just for a few likes. They have no regard for the danger they pose. Imagine if a boat had passed beneath.”

Shortly before the unnamed man jumped, locals could be heard saying: "No!" and telling him not to take the risk.

There were audible gasps in the back of the video as he jumped into the water but he was unscathed - he climbed out of the canal and was handed a towel by a friend a few minutes later.

The man was very lucky as some of Venice’s canals have been drained of water in the last few weeks as a result of a series of exceptionally low tides.

If he jumped into one of the lower ones he may have hit his head and been severely injured.

In May last year, two American tourists stripped off and dived naked into a canal in the residential district of Castello.

Shocked locals observed them swimming for around five minutes in the water which houses sewage drained from nearby houses.

And in August last year, Mr Brugnaro offered dinner to whoever can identify the two "arrogant idiots" filmed surfing down the Grand Cana.

Footage of the incident went viral and the mayor pleaded for "everyone to help us identify them to punish them".

He then later tweeted that the two had been identified.

The two surfers' boards, worth around £21,122, were confiscated and the pair were fined for endangering the safety of navigation along the canal and were expelled from the city.
