Crest Hill police fatally shoot man after he stabbed and seriously wounded officer

A man was shot and killed by Crest Hill police after he stabbed and seriously wounded a police officer answering a domestic call Monday night, officials said.

The confrontation happened around 7:30 p.m. at a home in the 1400 block of Pioneer Road near the Pioneer Road Apartments, according to the Will County sheriff’s office.

A woman had called police and, crying, said her husband had punched her in the face while their children were present. The husband, 30-year-old Matthew Parks, could be heard shouting in the background, saying he was going to kill himself and to “go ahead and send the police in,”  the sheriff’s office said.

Three Crest Hill officers responded and confronted Parks, who stabbed one of them in the leg, the office said. Police shot Parks several times and he died on the scene, the office said.

The wounded officer suffered a cut to the femoral artery, and one of the responding officers applied a tourniquet before the officer was taken to Amita Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet in serious condition.

The Will and Grundy County Major Crimes Task Force was investigating the incident.
