Creetown youngster holding sponsored bike ride to help local football club

A kind-hearted youngster is holding a sponsored bike ride to help his local football club.

Ally Dorans plans to cycle 14 miles from Creetown to Newton Stewart and back on November 1 to raise cash for Creetown FC.

Like many teams, the Castle Cary Park side’s finances have been pushed to the limit with the coronavirus pandemic meaning fans aren’t allowed into games.

As a result, clubs are being deprived vital income and facing a fight for survival and nine-year-old Ally hopes his bike ride will help out.

He said: “Usually, on a Saturday, my Auntie Paula and my mum open the pie hut at Castle Cary to sell pies and hot drinks. The club get donated the pies by William Lindsey family butchers and they then sell them and hot drinks.

“I’ve heard them saying that they need to raise some money now because they can’t let people in so they don’t have any money coming in and still need to pay the bills.

“I’m also a ball boy. I get the water ready for the team to and help tidy up after games and training.

“I want to help raise as much as I can so that when I’m older I can play for the team just like my papa.

Proud dad Stevie, who is a coach at the club, said: “It’s something he’s taken on himself. He overheard us talking at the end of a game about how we had no money coming in and wanted to help out.

“The wee kitchen would probably take in £120 or £130 at a game and the committee room would maybe be another few hundred pounds. With costs and transport an away game is about £190 so one home game covers about two away games but that money isn’t there just now.

“We’ve changed our weekly draw to a monthly one and we’re also having a virtual race night, which will hopefully bring in £200 or £300. Ally has already raised £350 so we think it could maybe reach £1,000 or £1,500, which would be fantastic.”

Anyone who would like to sponsor Ally can do so online at www.creetownfc.co.uk.
