Creepy abandoned hospital near Edinburgh filmed by urban explorer

Fascinating footage has resurfaced showing an East Lothian psychiatric hospital that's lain empty since the mid-90s.

The YouTube video, uploaded by TeEnZiE (otherwise known as Tina), explores the derelict building in the village of East Fortune - just over 20 miles from Edinburgh's city centre. In the footage, we see inside the old hospital which was at one stage a tuberculosis ward before becoming a psychiatric hospital in the 50s.

Today, the East Fortune hospital has been left to rot - whilst elsewhere on the grounds sits the National Museum of Flight. In the upload, Tina explores the creepy building and the relics from the past that have been left behind.

From old musical instruments and prams to abandoned and wrecked hospital equipment, a tour of the hospital makes for spooky viewing. The explorer makes her way round the dark building by torchlight, in footage that could be used in one of the Conjuring movies.

When the hospital eventually closed in 1997, the remaining patients were transferred to Roodlands Hospital in Haddington. Many of the building's items, hospital equipment and furniture were left behind.

In one room, piles of old chairs and tables fill the space - and you could be forgiven for thinking you’re watching an episode of Hoarders. Despite the ease of access into East Fortune Hospital, investigating the building isn’t recommended.

Firstly, signs warn of danger on entering the perimeter and the building itself is deemed unsafe due to its dilapidated state. Additionally, more signs warn of asbestos around the site.

With the building having stood for over 100 years, and having been abandoned for almost 25 years, it’s understandable why making your way round the hospital might not be the best idea - and the YouTube upload alone would probably put you off the idea.

In 2017, police issued a warning over entrance to the hospital. Responding to a number of reports relating to youngsters entering the derelict building, as well as a small fire being started in the building, officers were forced to put out a caution.

They also highlighted the number of missing drain covers around the site, which presented a high risk to the public. Inspector Andy Hill, from Haddington Police Station, said: “The buildings in the old hospital at East Fortune present numerous risks to anyone entering the grounds without the proper authority or safety equipment.

“The site may seem a popular place for young people to gather given its relatively remote location, but it is not a safe place and I would urge all parents and guardians to remind any children in their care of this.

“Please do not risk your own safety, or the safety of others by visiting and entering the old hospital grounds.”
