Police have charged a road crash victim who wielded an axe and allegedly threatened emergency service workers when they tried to rescue her from her car in Adelaide's south on Friday night.

The black Holden station wagon, driven by a 33-year-old woman who was the only person in the car, crashed and rolled onto its side on Goodwood Road at Goodwood at about 11pm.

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, converged on the scene.

As they did so, the woman brandished a hatchet at her rescuers, before she was eventually pulled from the wrecked vehicle, police said.

"The female driver and sole occupant, a 33-year-old woman, allegedly threatened emergency service workers with an axe before dropping the weapon and being helped out of the car," Senior Constable Matt Brown told ABC Radio Adelaide.

The driver was then transferred to an ambulance.

Police said she was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment and a mental health assessment.

Earlier on Saturday, they said they expected to charge the woman — who is described as being of no fixed address — when she was released back into their custody.

That has now occurred, and police said she had been charged with assaulting an emergency services worker, carrying an offensive weapon, and driving without due care.

She was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on July 24.

Meanwhile, police have also said investigations are ongoing into the theft of a luxury car that crashed on the South Eastern Freeway at Monarto South on Friday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 7.15am after reports a car had left the freeway and crashed into a tree.

woman was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the impact of the crash was so severe the engine was ripped from the red Mercedes Benz and landed some distance away.

Police said investigations into the theft are ongoing, and have asked anyone who witnessed the crash, saw the car in the lead-up to the incident, or who may have captured it on dash cam to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
