Craig Mallon murder detectives are hunting a mystery woman who called emergency crews hours after the Scot's death as she may hold vital information.
The 26-year-old, from Coatbridge was killed by a single blow outside a nightclub in Spain's party resort, Lloret de Mar in the early hours of May 19, 2012.
Craig was on his brother, Bryan's stag-do in the Costa Brava town when a group of young men, believed to be French, attacked him and his friends as they left Rockefellers Bar in the early hours.
Despite a number of eyewitness accounts and authorities discovering the group of key witnesses had left their hotel early, local officers were unable to solve the case.
Almost a decade on the team probing Craig's murder is appealing for a mystery female caller to come forward.
The woman who contacted emergency crews hours after his death claimed she saw a "distinctively tall man" and others in a fight.
A representative from the Craig Mallon Appeal released a statement on Thursday afternoon.
It read: "Mystery female caller may hold the key.
"An English speaking woman telephoned the Spanish emergency services at 6.26am on Sunday, May 19 2012.
"This woman spoke about a tall man and others involved in a fight.
"The description of the distinctively tall man features in other witness statements.
"This woman's information is vital."
It continued: "The woman saw fit to make the call to the emergency services to report the incident.
"Did she tell anyone else about what she saw or or that she made that phone call?
"Despite this being 10 years ago this woman will still recollect seeing such a violent incident but may not have realised the fatal consequences.
"Please contact us with any information you have.
"Your information will be treated in the strictest confidence."
People at the scene of the killing said the trouble had been sudden and had been started for no obvious reason.
Attackers outside Rockerfellers were heard shouting: “Fils de pute (French for son of a b***h).”
In 2020 we told how Craig's bereft father, Ian Mallon believes the distress contributed to his wife Antoinette’s death in 2018 aged just 49 not knowing her son's killer.
Ian said: “Our whole life changed from the minute we got the phone call to say our son was dead. My life changed and so did Antoinette’s.
“After a while, a few months or a year, I don’t know, we lost hope of getting justice, but we still wanted answers to let us have some kind of closure. Then my wife got ill.
“Our whole family could never be the same again but I felt she was broken. She had given up."
Ian added: “She had lung cancer but she wasn’t a smoker. Our doctor told us that stress was a terrible, terrible thing, known to medics as the silent killer.
“I’ve no doubt that between them, the people who killed our son and those who failed to give it the importance it deserved and failed to mount a thorough investigation also killed his mother.
Retired Strathclyde detective David Swindle, known for his work on serial killer Peter Tobin, co-founded Justice Abroad to support British families affected by serious crime outside the UK.
He previously told the Record: "You never give up on a homicide. Craig’s loved ones still need justice.”
