Craig Breen was 'more than just a driver', Hyundai boss says in heartfelt tribute

Irish rally car legend Craig Breen was "more than just a driver, he was a true lover of the sport," said Hyundai Motorsport President Sean Kim following his shock death.

The Waterford man, 33, was killed when his car crashed during a pre-race test on the route near the town of Lobor in Croatia at around 11am on Thursday.

In an emotional tribute, Mr Kim said: "The reality of yesterday has still not sunk in, and it is unlikely to for a very long time.

"Everyone here in Alzenau is feeling the loss of our teammate and friend Craig deeply, and we are supporting our colleagues through this incredibly difficult time."

Mr Kim continued: "To say he was a much-valued and well-regarded member of our team only touches the surface. Craig had a passion for rallying that ran deep."

He also said the talented rally driver "wore his heart on his sleeve" and said he had a "way with words that was completely unique" before adding "his end-of-stage quotes were always a highlight."

Local reports revealed Breen's car went off the road and collided with a pole while preparing for next week's rally, his second of the season.

During the pre-event test for Croatia Rally, the famous Irish rally champion Craig Breen ran off the track and died on a local road in Golubovac near Lobor, Croatia on April 13, 2023. Breen hit the front left end of a wooden post and died on the spot. Passenger James Fulton was uninjured. Breen was one of the most famous rally drivers. He is the son of Ray Breen, the Irish national rally champion. He started karting at the age of nine, and rallying at the age of 17. From 2019 to 2021, he drove for the WRC Hyundai team, and after one season with Ford, he returned to the Hyundai team this year. Last year, he finished fourth in Croatia. His co-driver, fellow Irishman James Fulton, 31, was unhurt in the incident.

Breen, who started out as a co-driver before switching to driving in 2008, finished second in Rally Sweden in February when he made his return to the team on a part-time basis after a year with M-Sport Ford.

He was a world championship regular over the years, although rarely for a full season, and while not a winner he finished second in six rallies.

Mr Kim added: "Craig was also a phenomenal driver … he was performing at the top of his game and reminding us all of the incredible talent he possessed.

"It is clear the whole rallying community and beyond is feeling this profound loss. The outpouring of grief and sadness in the past day is testament to the man that Craig was.

"He leaves behind a legacy within Hyundai Motorsport and the wider motorsport community that is difficult to put into words. Rest in peace, dear friend."

No information about Craig’s repatriation or funeral details has been released yet.
