Cracking Easter treats on offer at Aldi, Sainsbury's and Tesco

Supermarkets are going hot cross bun crazy this year, as we get ready to celebrate the first sociable Easter since 2019.

German discounter Aldi has gone all-out with what it claims to be the biggest ever supermarket hot cross bun, as big as a human head.

And to prove the point, it has recruited the woman with the world's biggest mouth to give it a go. TikTok star Samantha Ramsdell, from Conneticut, USA, who holds the enviable Guinness World Records title of the world’s largest mouth gape, tried to fit the 600g bun in - and failed.

Broadcasting the challenge to her 2.9 million TikTok followers, Samantha geared up to gobble the gigantic Easter treat, but despite a valiant effort (and several attempts) from the viral star, was unable to fit it into her mouth in one bite.

If you want to give it a go, look out for the Specially Selected Giant Brioche Hot Cross Bun, which is four times the size of a standard bun. It joins Aldi’s full range of Hot Cross Buns on offer this Easter, including Strawberries and Cream and Cheddar Cheese and Caramelised Onion.

Not to be outdone, Tesco has launched an entire hot cross bun cafe - but you'll have to travel to London to see it. The cafe, in trendy Shoreditch, features Tesco products with an innovative twist on the hot cross bun, including vegan ‘Hot Cross Bangers and Smash at brunch, Hot Cross Scones at afternoon tea, and Hot Cross Bun Espresso Martinis and Hot Cross Bun Steak Tartare at dinner.

For those not able to make it to the pop-up café in Shoreditch, all Tesco in-store cafes will also be serving up one of the dishes from the Hot Cross Bun Café from April 4 to 17 - the Hot Cross Bun Ice Cream Sandwich.

Alessandra Bellini, Tesco chief customer officer, said: “After two years of pared back celebrations, we wanted to do something special to bring people together this Easter. The hot cross bun is very much having a moment in 2022, as reflected by our focus on quality at an affordable price along with innovation in this year’s ranges.”

Sainsbury's, meanwhile, has found itself in hot water with shoppers over one of its new Easter treats. Chocolate flavoured hummus has not gone down well with customers, who have taken to social media to complain.

Facebook page Snack News & Reviews recently shared an image of a new Sainsbury’s snack, with some shoppers saying the supermarket has “taken it too far”. The image shows a pot of Carrots & Chocolate Flavoured Hummus which is a part of the Easter Bunny Snacks range.

The pack, which costs £1, contains carrot batons and a dip made from cooked chickpeas, golden syrup, sesame seed paste, cocoa powder and concentrated lemon juice.

One said: “Just throw the whole world in the bin and be done. You've taken it too far”. On Twitter, an outraged @Amarcow10101 tweeted: "I am in utter disbelief, to my dismay my local only stock this now. I’m not ready for this after having regular hummus with my meal deal for years! What next ? Apricot sausage rolls??! When will it end!"
