Crack dealer was selling drugs to 'fund his own habit'

A man caught dealing crack cocaine on the streets of Cardiff was doing so to “fund his own habit,” a court has heard. Steven Evans admitted to dealing crack cocaine to a man and woman in Avondale Gardens in Cardiff on June 17, 2021 in what the judge, Recorder Simon Hughes described as “the quintessential drug deal.”

Cardiff Crown Court heard a police officer on duty observed Evans giving the pair an item which was later found to be three wraps of cocaine worth approximately £60. Evans was arrested the same day and had his home address searched where police found an iPhone and digital scales with powder traces on them.

Texts on the phone, which were examined by police, revealed evidence of Evans’ intent to supply crack cocaine. One text, sent to Evans on May 15 from someone identified as ‘Lee’, read: “30 whiskey”, which was interpreted to mean a £30 street deal of crack cocaine. The court heard Evans replied: “Come get it.”

Evans, of Avondale Gardens, admitted during an interview on June 17, 2021, that he had arranged to meet the man and woman and that he had sent texts and advertised supplying drugs over social media. Evans, who has six previous convictions for 10 offences, was doing this to fund his own habit, the court heard.

Nicholas Gedge, for Evans, said that he had been “badly addicted to drugs for some time” but was making “a step in the right direction”, having had been having Buvidal injections for his heroin addiction as well as drastically cutting down on his use of other drugs. Evans admitted to two counts – the supply of crack cocaine from May 2 to June 11 ,2021, and the supply of a controlled drug on June 17, 2021. He was given a two-year suspended jail sentence with Recorderr Hughes saying he had a “realistic expectation of rehabilitation”.
