KOCHI: CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury has said that the Kerala unit is the party's backbone and it needs to defend the unit and the LDF government. The development agenda proposed by the CPM and the LDF government in Kerala is an alternative to the central government’s policies, he said.
Inaugurating the CPM state conference in Kochi on Tuesday, Yechury said Kerala was showing the way forward for the entire country. “In an orchestrated interview given to an electronic media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Left today exists in only one corner of the country, that is Kerala. He also said the Leftist ideology is dangerous and they will have to fight to end it. Why is it dangerous, Mr PM?," Yechury asked. “It is dangerous as it gives an alternative to everything the Union government has been doing. It is destroying the unity and dignity of the country, destroying the livelihood of people and looting the country,” he said.
Yechury said garnering the maximum votes against the BJP is the party's objective. The BJP should be isolated and this should be done in a multi-pronged manner, including on the electoral front, he said.
The CPM general secretary, however, didn't say a word about the Congress. It should be noted that the party central committee had to bring out a draft political resolution recently, suggesting no alliance with the Congress even while fighting the BJP, following protests from mainly Kerala leaders.
Yechury said the CAA and electoral bond cases have been pending before the Supreme Court for the past three years. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is functioning in a partisan manner while agencies like the CBI are acting like arms of the government. At the same time, agitations are growing against the government’s policies, he said.
