Cowboys tried to trade for Jerry Jeudy before NFL’s deadline

Before the NFL’s trade deadline last week, the Dallas Cowboys attempted to trade for Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero (via Cowboys Wire).

Denver picked Jeudy in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Alabama. Jeudy has shown flashes of great potential and his route running is superb, but injuries and inconsistent performances have hindered Jeudy’s career so far.

Jeudy is on pace for a career year this season, with 30 receptions for 449 yards and three touchdowns through eight games. If the Broncos pick up Jeudy’s fifth-year option, he will be under contract through the 2024 season. If that option is declined, Jeudy will become a free agent after the 2023 season.

The Green Bay Packers also showed interest in Jeudy before the trade deadline. It is believed that Denver was seeking a second-round pick, but neither the Cowboys nor Packers (or anyone else) was willing to pay that price.

Broncos general manager George Paton did not discuss specific offers for Jeudy during his post-deadline press conference last week, but he did say the team wanted to keep their wide receiver room together.

“We received a number of calls on our receivers and some other positions,” Paton said on Nov. 1. “We wanted to keep our young, talented receivers. We started to get some rhythm in the last game versus Jacksonville and we just feel good with where we’re going.

“We’re trending in the right direction with Jerry, [KJ] Hamler and Courtland [Sutton]. We didn’t want to break that up. We have a good thing going. We’re in it to win it moving forward and so we kept all of our receivers.”

After a bye on Sunday, Denver is now set to go on the road to face the Tennessee Titans in Week 10.
