Anderson’s report also states that Elliott requested the release, which the Cowboys granted. The Cowboys later made Elliott’s release official, with Jerry Jones releasing a statement.
“Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster today,” said Jones. “As I have said many times previously, Zeke’s impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him and wish him the absolute best.”
After spending 2023 with the New England Patriots, Elliott re-signed with the Cowboys last offseason. Elliott primarily backed up Rico Dowdle.
Elliott, 29, finishes his second stint with 226 yards rushing and three touchdowns in 15 games.
The Cowboys drafted Elliott out of Ohio State with the fourth pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Elliott has the third most rushing touchdowns (71) and rushing yards (8,488) in the Cowboys’ history.

Will A Playoff Team Sign Ezekiel Elliott?
The Detroit Lions picked up an older Zach Ertz during last years playoff push.
I anticipate they do the same thing with Ezekiel Elliot. Short yardage/ power back that you can trust in pass pro. https://t.co/vsX5fP9i5j

Elliott requested his release in hopes of signing with a playoff team.
The Detroit Lions are the first team that comes to mind when considering a franchise that could use Elliott’s services.
Running back David Montgomery is currently sidelined with a torn MCL. His return is not guaranteed. Elliott could step right in and become Detroit’s short-yardage back and backup to Jahmyr Gibbs. Elliott is also an excellent pass-blocker.
Elliott will now hit waivers. If he goes unclaimed, Elliott will become a free agent.
