Cowboys Release Ezekiel Elliott After Disappointing Season

The Dallas Cowboys made the decision to release running back Ezekiel Elliott, bringing an end to his tenure with the team. Elliott, who was drafted fourth overall in 2016, had a promising start to his career with two rushing titles in his first three seasons. However, his performance declined in recent years, leading to his release.

At 29 years old, Elliott now has the opportunity to join a playoff team in need of veteran help at the running back position. This move mirrors a similar situation last season when another Pro Bowler, Dalvin Cook, found success with a new team after being released.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones expressed respect and appreciation for Elliott's contributions to the team, acknowledging his place in the franchise's history. Despite his release, Elliott's impact on the Cowboys will be remembered for years to come.

After a brief stint with the New England Patriots, Elliott returned to the Cowboys on a one-year deal, hoping to recapture his earlier success. However, he struggled to secure the lead back role, with Rico Dowdle emerging as the team's primary rusher.

In his final season with the Cowboys, Elliott posted career-low numbers in rushing yards and carries. Off-field issues also marred his time with the team, including a suspension in 2017 and disciplinary actions in the most recent season.

Elliott leaves the Cowboys with impressive career statistics, including nearly 9,000 rushing yards and 74 touchdowns. Despite falling short of expectations in his later years, he remains one of the notable figures in Cowboys history, ranking behind legends like Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett.

As the Cowboys prepare for their season finale against Washington, the team will move forward without Elliott, marking the end of an era for the star running back in Dallas.
