The New York Giants host the Dallas Cowboys in the first Sunday night game of the 2023 NFL season.
The Cowboys own the historical record against the Giants, but the Giants want to improve upon what they did last season. Beating the Cowboys would be the next natural step in that evolution.
Buy Giants TicketsThe Giants spent the offseason adding offensive weapons and solidifying the defensive depth. With another year under their collective belts, the Giants’ defense is expected to be at the top of the league, particularly the front seven.
One of their keys to victory for this week is that the front seven must get to Dak Prescott.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy knows this.
“I think the Giants front is the first of many division battles. It’s an outstanding front, you know, so much is said about both the defensive tackles. Excellent players, I have a lot of respect for the way they play,” McCarthy told reporters this week.
“I think they’ve definitely come into their own. I thought last year, particularly at the end of the year, they were playing at an extremely high level. So, I do like their edge guys, I think their edge guys are better than advertised, so I think this is an excellent front.”
Last year, the Giants defense recorded 381 blitzes, 40 sacks, 48 hurries, 66 knockdowns, and 158 pressures. With the growth of the players the Giants already have as individuals and as a team, there’s no reason to think they’ll slow down now.
McCarthy can try to prepare his offense for the likes of Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Leonard Williams, but once the whistle blows, all bets are off.
