Cowboys’ McCarthy Says He Loves TCU QB Max Duggan

Quarterback Max Duggan had a remarkable senior season at TCU, throwing for 3,698 yards, 32 touchdowns and just eight interceptions, adding 423 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. As he led the Horned Frogs to an unlikely national championship game appearance he caught the eye of one nearby NFL coach: the Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy.

While Dak Prescott is locked in as Dallas’ starting quarterback, there is plenty of buzz indicating that the franchise could target a young signal-caller at some point in the draft. Cooper Rush, who filled in admirably for Prescott during his injury this season, is set to hit free agency later this month.

At the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, McCarthy admitted that he’s impressed with Duggan, who is being widely projected as a middle-to-late-round pick in the upcoming 2023 draft.

“I just love the way he plays,” McCarthy said, per The Athletic‘s Jon Machota. “In the games I saw, you’re never out of the game with Max. I think that’s a huge characteristic as a QB that you have to have in this league. You have to win those games. You see it every year in the playoffs.”

McCarthy isn’t alone in having his eye on the TCU gunslinger. During practices for the Senior Bowl, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he was “most impressed” with Duggan among the quarterbacks.

“He just looked comfortable. He looked confident. And he was really throwing the ball around,” Jones said. “He was certainly the most impressive quarterback in my mind.”

Dallas is set to enter the 2023 NFL draft with six total picks, starting with the 26th pick in the first round.
