North Queensland have unveiled a new-look backline with tyro half Tom Duffy to make his NRL debut and dashing centre Jaxon Purdue winning a starting berth against Manly.
Star forward Jason Taumalolo remains on ice and will not play at Brookvale Oval on Saturday. The 2015 title winner has not fully recovered from foot surgery in December.
Cowboys coach Todd Payten told AAP that Purdue was "a high-end talent" and that former Australian Schoolboy star Duffy had "really gone for it" in the pre-season after being given a chance at winning the No.7 jersey.
Purdue has won the spot vacated by Valentine Holmes while the other leading candidate Zac Laybutt will play Queensland Cup for Northern Pride.
Laybutt has done little contact in his recovery from an ACL rupture last year and will be eased back into the fray.
The 19-year-old Purdue shone in eight NRL games last year, and again in the pre-season trials.
"I have got a very high opinion of him as do many others within the building," Payten said.
"He earned the respect of this playing group quickly last year. Things happened fast for him.
"He came from 19s into Q Cup and into first grade playing positions he wasn't overly familiar with and did exceptionally well.
"He is a five-eighth by trade and has time on his side. Wherever we roll him out in the season - whether it be fullback, centre, half or five-eighth - I will not be worried about any of those positions."
Jake Clifford, who finished last season at halfback, has done little contact since returning to full training from a hernia operation.
That opened the door for Duffy, who has bashed it down. A strong display in the trial win over Melbourne confirmed his selection.
The 21-year-old has impressed with his defence and kicking game and has rugby league intelligence to understand a game plan and deliver. He is also a strong communicator.
Duffy has the experienced Tom Dearden alongside him at five-eighth and Scott Drinkwater at fullback to assist him with his playmaking.
"Duff has provided excellent direction for the team and he is a calm head under pressure," Payten said.
"There is definitely a new feel and flavour in the team.
"There are good young players fighting it out and it pushes each player along at training. It has been exciting as a coach to see them go after it."
