Covid travel rules to Spain, Greece and Portugal as entry requirements ease

Greece is the latest country to announce that they are preparing to ease entry requirements.

From May 2, they will be lifting all restrictions ahead of the summer holidays.

This comes after Spain has confirmed that those who are fully vaccinated no longer need to fill out a Health and Control Form.

Travel restrictions are easing around Europe but travellers are reminded that each European state is responsible for their own rules. So they must check official guidance before booking.

Some countries are allowing those who are not fully vaccinated in if they either prove they have recovered or test negative.

Unless they can prove you are fully vaccinated or recovered in the last six months, Spain will not allow tourists in.

Here are the latest rules for Spain, Greece and Portugal.

Spain

In the latest update from the Foreign Office, those who can prove digitally they are fully vaccinated no longer need to fill out a Health Control Form.

For everyone aged 18 and over to enter Spain you need one of the following:

  • Proof of being fully vaccinated with a QR code. This means being double jabbed and if it's been 270 days since the second, then a booster is needed at least 14 days.
  • Medical proof of being fully recovered from Covid-19 in the last six months.

If you are aged 12-17, you can enter by showing proof of being fully vaccinated (two doses and booster if applicable) or a negative PCR test (not NHS) taken within 72 hours, antigen tests won't be accepted, or a proof of recovery from Covid in the last six months.

If teenagers haven't been fully vaccinated then they will need to complete a Health Control Form.

Children under the age of 12 years old do not need to:

  • Complete an online Health Control Form before travel
  • Show proof of being fully vaccinated on entry to Spain
  • Take diagnostic tests prior to arrival
  • Show proof of having recovered from prior COVID-19 infection in the last 6 months
  • Meet the requirements outlined in the Spanish Ministry of Health ‘Travel and COVID-19’ page, even if they have visited a ‘risk country’ in the previous 14 days

If you are unvaccinated and cannot provide proof of recovery, then you will not be allowed into Spain unless your reason falls under the ' essential ' guidelines.

Greece

Health officials in Greece have confirmed that they will be lifting all entry requirements from May 2.

However, until then, travellers still need to show proof of vaccination, or proof of recovery or negative Covid test.

Greece accepts private PCR test or antigen tests.

Foreign Advice also warns that testing on arrival could be required for some people.

They add: "In addition, arrivals into Greece may be required to undergo a rapid Covid-19 test on arrival. If you test positive on arrival in Greece, you (and those you are travelling with) will have to self-isolate for at least 5 days at home or in quarantine hotels provided by the Greek state.

"If you have no symptoms on day 5, or your symptoms have improved (e.g. having no fever for the past 24 hours without the use of medicine), you will be allowed to end your quarantine. However, if you still have a fever you will be required to continue to quarantine until your fever drops."

Portugal

You can enter Portugal if you;

  • Have proof of being fully vaccinated
  • Or show proof of a negative PCR test (taken no more than 72 hours before entry) or rapid lateral flow test (taken no more than 24 hours before entry). These have to be taken by a professional.
  • Or with a Covid-19 recovery certificate showing you recovered from Covid-19, no less than 11 days and no more than 180 days before you travel.

All travellers must fill out a passenger locator form.

Children aged 11 and under do not need to take a test or show proof of vaccination or recovery to enter mainland Portugal and the Azores.
