COVID staff absences blamed for swathe of weekend train cancellations on EK service

Commuters in East Kilbride were faced with a swathe of train cancellations at the weekend.

Angry locals took to social media to slam the service and said carriages on any services that did run yesterday (Sunday) were jam-packed.

ScotRail - which came into public ownership on April 1 after previous operator Abellio lost the franchise - said staff absences due to Covid were to blame.

A disgruntled passenger wrote: "Most East Kilbride to Glasgow trains cancelled - joke of a train service."

One commuter went on: "An earlier train was cancelled and we were packed like sardines!! People couldn’t get on at a lot of the stations."

And one man added: "I planned my journey on 9.55am train (was showing ok last night) and now will have to drive - so much for being green."

Another said: "I was on 12.30 to Glasgow only two coaches, it was full leaving EK."

Passengers in East Kilbride have long called for improvements to the town's rail services and had welcomed plans to electrify and dual the line.

However, a shock announcement by Transport Scotland last October saw this downgraded to electrification only leading to an outcry from local politicians and campaigners, who have called for original plans to be reinstated.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail head of customer operations, told Lanarkshire Live : “We’re sorry to those customers who experienced disruption to their journey.

“Like all businesses, ScotRail is not immune to the impact of coronavirus on its staff but we are working flat out to deliver a service that our customers expect and deserve.”

The train operator added that services improved today (Monday) with 'minor disruptions'.
