Covid latest: Bristol records eight new deaths amid huge spike for region

Eight people have died with coronavirus in the Bristol region, the latest government data shows.

In what is another huge surge in cases in our area, nearly 2000 people have tested positive for Covid in the last 24 hours across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

It comes as the South West region is recording the country's third highest Covid rate with 1,161 cases per 100,000 people.

Figures show five people died with Covid in the latest 24 hour period in Bristol, while two people died in South Gloucestershire and one in North Somerset.

Meanwhile Bristol recorded 899 new cases, South Gloucestershire 516 and North Somerset 442.

That brings the total number of cases across all three local authority areas since the pandemic began to 252,940.

Nationally, 88,085 new Covid cases were recorded and 534 Covid-related deaths.

It comes as Boris Johnson faced questioning at today's PMQs amid more allegations suggesting he attended as many as six events that are being looked into by police.

The number of positive test results in each area of the Bristol region since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results recorded today in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 130,381 (+899)

  • North Somerset: 49,275 (+442)

  • South Gloucestershire: 73,284 (+516)

The number of deaths recorded in each area of Bristol since the beginning of the pandemic is as follows, with new deaths within 28 days of a positive test in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 650 (+5)

  • North Somerset: 406 (+1)

  • South Gloucestershire: 428 (+2)
