Covid Ireland: Who needs a second booster? All you need to know as vaccine rollout continues

The first round of 'second booster' vaccinations against Covid-19 in Ireland began being rolled out on Friday.

The situation has improved massively in the country so far in 2022, though the virus is not completely eliminated.

As such, the HSE has continued the vaccination programme with the rolling out of the 'second boosters'

On Friday morning, there were 599 people in hospital with the deadly virus.

39 of these were needing treatment in the ICU.

Who needs a second booster right now?

A second booster vaccine is now recommended for some people who are at higher risk from serious COVID-19 illness.

You should get a second booster if you are:

  • 65 years or older, or
  • 12 years or older with a weak immune system

If you are over 12 with a weak immune system, your second booster should be your fifth dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

You may be more at risk of serious illness from COVID-19 if you have a weak immune system or are aged 65 or older.

The HSE say that "data from other countries shows that a second booster will give you extra protection from COVID-19. A second booster can prevent the possibility of hospitalisation or death from COVID-19 illness."

How long to wait before getting a second booster

You can get your second booster 4 months (at least 120 days) after your first booster. You can check the date of your first booster on your digital COVID cert.

If you have had COVID-19 since your first booster, wait at least 4 months after you tested positive or from when your symptoms started.

How to get your second booster dose

You can book an appointment to get your second booster at a vaccination centre.
