Covid hotspots in Ashington and Sunderland but North East cases drop overall

Covid cases across the seven North East local authority areas dropped by between 28.1% to 40.6%, according to the latest Government figures.

It covers the seven day period ending April 9 and details the case rate per 100,000 people and also compares it to the previous seven day period, although the number of tests available have also fallen.

While it is good news overall, there are still two noticeable hotspots in the region - in Northumberland and Sunderland - which have the highest rates.

In Northumberland it is the Ashington West postcode. While cases to April 9 actually fell by 15 to 70 there, that still represents an infection rate of 948.3 per 100,000 - almost double the overall local authority area rate of 515.4.

Meanwhile the North Hylton postcode area of Sunderland has seen an increase of cases of 20 to 77 up to April 9, representing an infection rate of 934.8 per 100,000 people, again nearly double the overall local authority area rate of 499.6.

Across the North East, the number of Covid cases fell by 5,162 to 9,657 up to April 9, representing an overall decrease of 35%. The biggest drop was in North and South Tyneside which each saw a 40.6% fall, and the lowest was in County Durham with a 28.1%.

Sunderland: 1,388 / -696 / -33.4%

South Tyneside: 573 / -392 / -40.6%

TOTAL: 9,657 / - 5,162 / - 34.8%
