Covid deaths in first week-on-week fall of 2022

A total of 1,385 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending January 28 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This is down seven per cent on the previous seven days and is the first week-on-week fall so far this year.

Around one in nine (11.2 per cent) deaths registered in England and Wales in the week to January 28 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate.

Some 333 care home resident deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales were registered in the week to January 28, down from 363 in the previous seven days.

In total, 45,687 care home residents in England and Wales have had Covid-19 recorded on their death certificate since the pandemic began.

The ONS figures cover deaths of care home residents in all settings, not just in care homes.

A total of 182,136 deaths have occurred in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, the ONS said.

The highest number on a single day was 1,485 on January 19 2021.

During the first wave of the virus, the daily toll peaked at 1,461 on April 8 2020.

In the latest daily figures published on Monday (February 7), the Government said a further 45 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19, bringing the total to 158,363, the Government said.

These figures now include deaths in England following possible reinfections of Covid-19.

There were 57,623 cases of Covid-19 reported in the UK on Monday, the Government said, which includes reinfections in England and Northern Ireland that are more than 90 days after a previous positive test.

The total is based on positive lab-confirmed PCR tests in all four nations of the UK, plus most positive lateral flow tests reported in England and all lateral flow tests reported in Northern Ireland.

Yesterday, the Government said a total of 52,437,297 first doses of Covid-19 vaccine had been delivered in the UK by February 6 - a rise of 8,321 on the previous day.

Some 48,594,494 second doses have been delivered, an increase of 16,605.

A combined total of 37,553,416 booster and third doses have been given, a day-on-day rise of 19,805.

Separate totals for booster and third doses are not available.
