COVID death toll surges by 23 in South Australia as more data becomes available

South Australia has recorded another 1,577 new cases of COVID. (ABC News: Stephen Opie)

South Australian health authorities have reported another 23 deaths of people with COVID, taking the total number to 213 since the start of the pandemic.

The deaths occurred throughout the first two months of the year, but SA Health said they had only now been included in the official statistics.

"Sadly, since the last report, SA Health has been notified that 23 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have passed away," SA Health said.

"The deaths notified since the last report have occurred between 31 December 2021 and 3 March 2022 and include [the] latest monthly data release from Births, Deaths and Marriages."

The 23 fatal cases represent more than 10 per cent of the state's total COVID death toll.

Those who died are 15 women and eight men.

While most were aged over 70 and one woman was aged over 100, the number also includes a woman aged in her 30s.

SA recorded another 1,577 new cases of COVID today, taking the total number of active cases to 18,289.

A total of 106 people with the virus remain in hospital, including 15 in intensive care.

Two people are on ventilation.

There have been 162,307 reported cases in the state since the start of the pandemic.

Just over 92 per cent of eligible South Australians aged 12 and over have received their second vaccine doses.
