Covid cases surge in Scotland as figures reach highest level since summer

The latest figures show Covid-19 infections in Scotland are at their highest since last July.

The ONS data shows that one in 25 Scots have tested positive for the virus, with 213,100 confirmed cases, representing 4.05 per cent of the population - jumping from 2.49 per cent last week.

National Record of Scotland figures also show there were 67 Covid-19 related deaths in the last week.

Despite the rise in cases over the last week Scotland has the lowest figures in the UK, with one in 20 in England and one in 18 people in Wales believed to be infected.

Michelle Bowen, head of health surveillance dissemination and strategy for the ONS said they would "continue to monitor the data closely."

She added: "Infections have risen across the whole of the UK.

"In England, Wales and Scotland, cases are at the highest they have been since July 2022, and the highest they have been since March 2022 in Northern Ireland."
