Covid case rates double in third of Trafford areas, data suggests

Cases of Covid-19 are doubling from week to week in more than a third of Trafford areas, the latest data from Public Health England suggests.

When Trafford’s Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs) are examined — with each area containing around 7,000 people — statistics from June 11 show that 10 parts of the borough are seeing coronavirus rates double week-on-week.

Trafford is made up of 28 MSOAs, meaning that more than a third of the borough is seeing rates rise quickly.

Of these 10, Trafford Park East, Altrincham West, Dunham & Warburton, and Lostock & Stretford Meadows have seen the biggest spikes.

Trafford Park East saw a week-on-week rise of 466.7 percent, Altrincham West, Dunham & Warburton experienced an increase of 175 percent, and a 160 percent jump was seen in Lostock & Stretford Meadows.

However, these areas are not the ones with the highest overall coronavirus rates in the borough.

Old Trafford recorded 326.5 cases per 100,000 residents in the seven days until June 11, with Gorse Hill seeing 291.3 per 100,000, and Trafford Park West notching up 276.4.

All of these areas, with the overall highest rates in the borough, are surrounded by similar or higher levels of infection.

For example, Old Trafford’s rate of 326.5 is bordered by Manchester’s Moss Side West on 461, Hulme and University on 361.9, and Hulme Park & St George's on 545.8.

Interestingly, Old Trafford is also one of the five MSOAs in the borough to see a week-on-week drop in its infection rate.

It fell by 2.6 percent in that area, the smallest drop of the five — the largest slide was in Urmston West, which saw a 52.4 percent drop.

Decreases were also seen in Firswood, 43.8 percent, Sale East, 30 percent, and Urmston East, 26.1 percent.

Like the whole of Greater Manchester, Trafford has been named by the government as an area where the Delta Variant is spreading, with official advice encouraging residents to self-test regularly, get the vaccine when it's offered, meet outdoors rather than inside if possible, and minimise travel into and out of the area.
