Covid-19 scam text warning as fraudsters impersonate HSE

A latest scam text doing the rounds in Ireland is trying to trick the public into believing they are a Covid-19 close contact so they can steal your personal information.

The scammers impersonate the HSE and send fraudulent text messages claiming that the person is a Covid-19 close contact. These scam messages usually contain a link to order tests.

One Dubliner received the message earlier today which read: "HSE: You have been in close contact of someone with COV-19 Omicron. To order a MANDATORY test kit kindly proceed below."

They told Dublin Live that when he clicked on the link, it brought them to a page which mimicked the HSE's website and was asked for his name, phone number, address and Eircode. They clicked out of the website as they realised the text had come from a mobile number, which seemed suspicious.

The HSE confirmed to Dublin Live that the message was fraudulent. They advise the public to be "careful of texts or emails that ask for personal details or ask you to click a link".

They said the HSE does send text messages with links in for appointments or additional information. They added that anyone who is unsure about a text or phone call from the HSE can contact their HSELive number on 1800 700 700.

Gardai have previously warned the public to never click on the link in the fake text, as this may allow the scammers to hack into your phone and steal private information.

People are also advised to never disclose private information over the phone or through text messages. Gardai say that if people mistakenly provides personal information in response to such scams, they should immediately contact their financial institution and their local garda station.
