Coveted limited edition McDonald's Happy Meal toys resold online for more than £250,000

Limited edition toys from a new range of McDonald's Happy Meals for adults are selling for more than £250,000 on eBay after the meals completely sold out in stores.

The boxed meals were designed to create a "nostalgic experience" for McDonald's customers, but had also inadvertently started a bidding war.

The meals, which each contained a Big Mac or nuggets, fries, a drink and one of four collectible figurines in a limited edition cardboard box, had been available to buy across America for 12.95 USD, or £11.46.

The toys were part of a partnership between the fast food brand and American streetwear label Cactus Plant Flea Market.

The four collectible toys designed by CPFM included the classic McDonald’s characters Birdie, Grimace, the Hamburglar and Cactus Buddy!, a character based on one of the fashion label's graphics.

An eBay user has now listed three of the unopened toys for $300,000 (£266,095) online (McDonald's/Instagram)

The promotion sparked a frenzy among McDonald's fans, who scrambled to get their hands on the meals.

A range of apparel was also released as part of the collaboration, which quickly sold out, Yahoo News reports.

One eBay user has now listed three of the unopened toys for $300,000 (£266,095) online.

"WILL SELL FAST!!" the seller wrote.

Someone else was asking 25,000 USD (£22,173)for an unopened toy.

The prices seemed ambitious, with previous listings showing the most someone has recently paid for Happy Meal goodies is US$2,400 (AU$3,800) for 150 sealed toys.

Manchester Evening News had recently contacted McDonald's asking if the meals would be making their way across the pond, with a spokesperson telling them: "We have no plans to roll this out in the UK."

The publication shared the news on Facebook , where commenters expressed their sadness over the news.

Joannah Barnard slammed: "No happiness for the UK!" Justin Humphreys wrote: "I imagine there must be a distinct lack of happy adults in the UK."

Angie Norwood-Pearson said: "Absolutely devastating. [...] I won’t sleep at night knowing I won’t get an adult happy meal ." Damo Pritt said: "That doesn't make me HAPPY at all."

Danny Robinson said: "We're getting the miserable Karen meal." Ian Duerdin laughed: "Don’t tell Jamie Oliver."

Francesca Marston suggested: "They should offer a smaller meal option for adults like a happy meal size though, not everybody can eat a full meal - elderly people or ones without a big appetite probably feel full up on a happy meal."

Diane Bracegirdle said: "I'd still buy the kids one for myself I've been having them for donkeys years." Cathie Leather commented "Happy meals aren't just for kids, it says "happy meal"."

Others couldn't help but make the same joke. Dave Felix said: "What’s so special?? Does it come with an “Adult Toy”?!? Hahaha."
